"HISTORY OF THE MONASTERY OF SANTA SUSANA DE LA TRAPA"

14.09.2014 13:35

The two volumes containing the history of the first Trappist monastery in Spain, recently published by the monks of La Oliva, contain the transcription of an 1805 manuscript preserved in the monastery and comprising three volumes.

The idea of transcribing this manuscript into digital form arose at a session of PREM (Monastic Studies Regional Plan) in Viaceli in the autumn of 2008. Several students volunteered to transcribe the text. Some “non-monastic” persons also participated, either friends of our monasteries or readers of Cistercium Magazine. But this work would not have seen the light without the hard work and tenacity of Viaceli’s Father Rafael Pascual Francisco.

We have before us here one of the most important historical and spiritual written documents of the Spanish Cistercian heritage. It is a “pedagogical” account that contains values proper to the Cistercian tradition that should never be forgotten, so that “those who come after”, as the chronicler tells us, “do not forget the benefits that the Lord has worked for them.”
